Dear FGSD Families,
Over the weekend, we were made aware of a social media post regarding an incident where racist language was used against a volunteer coach for the David Douglas High School (DDHS) football team. The Forest Grove School District stands firm in our commitment to create a school environment that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive and that supports the diversity of our student population and our community as a whole. We also extend this commitment to those who visit our district and community from other schools. Racially targeted language and behaviors are abhorrent. The District thoroughly investigates and responds to each incident.
What we know about this incident follows:
- In the social media post, it was stated that an individual in the Forest Grove High School (FGHS) parking lot targeted the DDHS football coach using racist language after the September 6th football game.
- The incident was reported to the FGHS athletic staff.
- The FGHS athletic director then reported the incident to the Forest Grove Police Department.
- An investigation was launched.
- The individual in question is currently unidentified.
- The investigation is currently ongoing.
To be clear, incidents involving racist or discriminatory language or actions will not be tolerated in the Forest Grove School District. We also firmly stand with the Oregon School Activities Association’s S.T.A.R. Initiative that promotes an environment of SAFETY, TOLERANCE, ACCEPTANCE, and RESPECT at all athletic events.
Our student athletes and the student athletes of visiting schools work extremely hard to be at their best while competing. They deserve to compete in an environment that is safe from hateful speech and actions. We will continue to exert our best efforts to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive school environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
With his permission, we want to elevate the statement shared by one of our FGHS student athletes in the social media thread in question. He said the following, “I will talk to our team/coaching staff as well because I personally think that this is unacceptable and should not be promoted. I’m sorry to anyone who was offended or was dishonored by what was said from our team/other FGHS students. I try to end anything that starts to happen or appear with my fellow team members and I’m sorry for not doing a better job.”
We applaud this student’s words and example of what it means to interrupt racism, and his model of what it looks like to treat everyone with respect. Interrupting racism requires everyone to speak up and take action. If you witness racism or bias, you can report these incidents to any district administrator or to the SafeOregon tip line (844-472-3367).

También respaldamos firmemente la Iniciativa STAR de la Asociación de Actividades Escolares de Oregón que promueve un entorno de SEGURIDAD, TOLERANCIA, ACEPTACIÓN y RESPETO en todos los eventos deportivos.
Nuestros estudiantes atletas y los estudiantes atletas de las escuelas que los visitan trabajan muy duro para estar en su mejor forma mientras compiten. Merecen competir en un entorno libre de discursos y acciones de odio. Continuaremos haciendo todo lo posible para crear un entorno escolar seguro, acogedor e inclusivo para todos los estudiantes, el personal y los visitantes.

Aplaudimos las palabras de este estudiante y su ejemplo de lo que significa interrumpir el racismo, y su modelo de cómo tratar a todos con respeto. Interrumpir el racismo requiere que todos hablen y tomen medidas.
